De Toren Black Lion Shiraz
The Black Lion is the heirloom of years of winemaking in De Toren’s continuous quest for perfection. It culminates the immense skill, dedication and profound passion of our winemaking team. The 2018 vintage of this exceptionally exclusive Shiraz, The Black Lion, is even richer, bolder, and more elegant than before, with the most luxurious mouthfeel. It is unlike anything you’ve ever tasted.
Fermented and aged in 200% new French Oak, each one of the mere 1392 bottles, is individually labelled and numbered by hand. The exclusive The Black Lion Shiraz is presented in an exquisite, handcrafted black wooden case, accompanied by the iconic key that ensures the safekeeping of this rare collector’s item with an ageing potential of over 40 years.
Infra-Red Aerial Imaging is used to specifically identify individual vines, which are then used to grow only four hand-manicured bunches per single vine. Each of these bunches receive individual attention and very specific manicuring during the ripening process. Following this, the grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed by the gentlest hands of a very select team. The Black Lion is the result of the masterful alchemy of these hand-selected grapes from three specifically selected terroirs to combine the Swartland’s raw power with the indisputable elegance of the Helderberg and Polkadraai areas in Stellenbosch.
This, along with the extraordinary devotion and expertise invested in crafting this one-of-a-kind Shiraz, is proof of the pedigree of this creation’s great investment potential.
Hailed as the ‘most powerful and luxurious Shiraz ever crafted in South Africa’, the incomparable The Black Lion is the result of the masterful alchemy of hand-chosen fruits. The meticulous thought and attention to detail put into our vinification process is reflected in
the quality of the wine. It’s not just another wine, it’s a wine made with passion.
A labour of love.

James Geldenhuys, Vivino Wine Lover, shares his thoughts on The Black Lion...
“Cannot help to agree with 5 stars. I am not a Shiraz fan but if all Shiraz taste like this, I will drink Shiraz all day and all night. This is the kind a bottle which you almost don't want to share.”
